The Long Road Appeal
The Appeal was launched in August 2014 to raise money to build a Cancer Centre. Over a period of less than 2 years, $500,000 was raised.
Fundraising took many forms including individual financial donations and many events. Some included the Annual Golf Day, Colac Gold Cup Luncheon, Longest Night Ball, Run Colac, Jamieson Family fundraiser, Melbourne Cup Luncheon, Murray to Moyne…the list goes on.
Each and every person, group, club or business who contributed have so much to be proud of. And we thank the Colac and district community for entrusting us with their hard earned dollars to make the Cancer Centre a reality.
The Centre was opened in April 2016 and was named after Frank Minchinton, a great supporter of Colac Area Health and the Appeal.
The Frank Minchinton Centre provides low risk chemotherapies as well as other supportive therapies while the McGrath Breast Care Nurse provides care and support commencing at diagnosis through to breast cancer treatment and beyond.
Bringing Specialist Care to Colac
In 2016, the Appeal continued with raising funds for consulting rooms for visiting Specialists. Three new consulting rooms and a treatment room were built to accommodate visiting medical specialists such as:
- Orthopaedic Surgeon
- Cardiology Services
The project was funded by bequests from the Estates of Ian Lindsay Hay and Nita and Frances McLean together with donations from individuals, community groups and fundraising events like the Colac Gold Cup Day and Annual Golf Day.
Building a Healthier Community
The Long Road Appeal now takes on another mantra – ‘Building a Healthier Community’ to support the work of Colac Area Health
Demand for health services is growing placing pressure on Colac Area Health’s available resources. For example, the number of presentations at Urgent Care is increasing by 8% per year. Government funding is limited and making ‘ends meet’ is getting harder.
When you or a family member require health care due to illness or accident, it can be a lengthy and difficult journey to recover. High quality healthcare can make that journey easier.
